Supervision
"Supervision is a formal process in which a qualified or trainee psychotherapist or psychotherapeutic counsellor regularly presents his or her client work to a designated or chosen supervisor as way of enhancing their practice through careful reflection on the process." (UKCP)
My Philosophy
I see supervision as a collaborative, co-created and transformative experience.
It's been described as having 3 main functions – the policy, the plumbing, and the poetry (Houston). We may explore practicalities, logistics and systems including ethical frameworks (the policy) or focus on developing understanding of the client and the process of therapy (the plumbing) or explore how the work of therapy is changing and challenging us as practitioners (the poetry).
In my experience, most supervision sessions include at least two of these.
I also hold a spiritual understanding of the work of therapy and supervision and believe that all human encounters have something to teach us.
Supervision offers us the opportunity to become present to whatever is being highlighted through our work, to step back and notice what is being disturbed in the process, and to find ways to turn it into new understanding, new compassion for self and other, and greater acceptance of our shared humanity.
I'm committed to offering a safe, confidential, and supportive space within which we can both take risks, allow vulnerability, and celebrate learning and development.
